Sailboat
The cheapest way to go a long way

Biscayne Bay is one of the best sailing grounds in the country: steady wind, protected water and somewhere to go at the end of it. A sailboat costs a fraction of a powerboat to run, and the trade you make is time — you arrive when the wind lets you.
What it is good for
- Biscayne Bay, the Keys and the crossing to the Bahamas
- Living aboard on a mooring or in a slip
- Owners who would rather spend on the boat than on fuel
What to watch for
- Fixed keels draw deep: many South Florida canals are simply unusable.
- Mast height, not hull length, decides which bridges you can pass.
- Standing rigging has a service life; ask when it was last replaced.
The dock it needs
The two numbers that matter are draft and air draft. A 5 ft keel rules out most shallow canals, and a 60 ft mast rules out every fixed bridge on the Intracoastal. Look for deep water and a clear run to an inlet.
