Hiring on the water: what to check
- A captain moving your boat should hold a current USCG license for the vessel’s tonnage and route, and be named on your insurance policy for that trip.
- Anyone working in the water on your hull should carry their own liability coverage; ask before they get in.
- Get the scope and the price in writing before the work starts — “diagnostic” hours add up fast on a diesel.
- For a purchase, a marine survey by an accredited surveyor is cheap insurance against a hull or engine problem you cannot see at the dock.
