Pontoon

Nothing else carries as many people as comfortably for the money. On protected water — the Intracoastal, a canal system, the bay on a calm day — a pontoon is a floating patio, and that is exactly what most families actually use a boat for.
What it is good for
- Big groups and multi-generation family days
- Canals, the Intracoastal and calm bay water
- Sunset cruises and swimming off the back
What to watch for
- Poor in a chop and pushed around by wind; keep it in protected water.
- Aluminum tubes and salt water need attention — check for corrosion and galvanic damage.
The dock it needs
Wide beam again: check the slip width. Otherwise it is the easiest boat to house — shallow draft, light, and a lift handles it without trouble.
