Bay & flats boat

For water measured in inches

Typical length
16–26 ft
Typical draft
0.5–1.5 ft
Dock needed
30 ft for the largest
Depth at MLW
3 ft or more

A poling platform, a quiet hull and a draft measured in inches. Flats boats exist to get into the skinny water of Florida Bay, the backcountry and the Everglades where the bonefish, permit and redfish are — places where anything else runs aground.

What it is good for

  • Sight fishing the flats and the backcountry
  • Everglades and Florida Bay
  • Trailering to wherever the fish are that week

What to watch for

  • Almost no shelter and very little freeboard: not a boat for crossing open water in a chop.
  • Running aground on seagrass damages protected habitat and carries real fines.
  • Resale is strongly brand-driven in this niche.

The dock it needs

Draft is a non-issue, so almost any waterfront home works. A lift and a shaded slip do more for resale value than dock length ever will.

Own one already? Put your length and draft in your Adonait Dock profile and we will email you when a waterfront home comes up with a dock that fits it.

Other boat types

General orientation for South Florida waters, not professional advice. Lengths and drafts are typical ranges — the only numbers that matter are the ones on the specific hull you are looking at. Before buying, get a survey from an accredited marine surveyor and verify depth and clearance on the actual route you will run.

Everything on Adonait Dock

Adonait Dock is the South Florida boating marketplace and community: buy and sell boats, engines, electronics and slips; offer or request marine services; find sandbars, ramps, waterfront parks and dock-and-dine spots; join raft-ups and group cruises; and search waterfront homes with private docks for sale and for rent. Listings and posts are created by members — Adonait is not a party to any transaction between them.
