Center console
The default South Florida boat, and for good reason

If you see one boat more than any other between Miami and the Keys, it is a center console. The helm sits in the middle so you can walk all the way around, which is what you want when a fish is running or when you are docking single-handed. Shallow enough for the flats and the sandbars, capable enough to run offshore on a decent day, and simple enough that a weekend owner can keep up with the maintenance.
What it is good for
- Sandbar days at Haulover, Nixon or Peanut Island
- Running out an inlet to fish the reef line
- Families that want shade, a head and room to move
- Owners who trailer instead of paying for a slip
What to watch for
- Open boat means no shelter: a summer squall soaks everyone.
- Multi-engine outboards are simple to service but expensive to replace — check hours and service records.
- A tall T-top raises air draft; measure it before assuming you clear a fixed bridge.
The dock it needs
Easy to dock and easy to house: most fit a 30–45 ft slip, and the shallow draft means depth at mean low water is rarely the problem. If you are buying a waterfront home for a center console, a lift matters more than dock length — leaving it in the water is what kills the bottom.
